About 100 couples expected to wed today at county courthouse Feb. 14 is long reserved as a day to express our devotion to loved ones, and today dozens of couples are expected to tie the knot before the justice of the peace in Upper Marlboro. Debbie Cooke, county licensing department manager, is expecting about a 33 percent increase in the number of marriages performed this year over last year. Last year, 66 civil marriage ceremonies were performed in Upper Marlboro on Valentine's Day. Cooke is expecting about 100 couples to exchange nuptials today. "There aren't many jobs where when people come to the counter [for help] they're happy," Cooke said. "When people come to court it isn't a happy time, but when people come here they are bubbling over [with joy]." On Monday, 30 couples applied for marriage licenses in town and a majority of them said that they were planning for Valentine's Day nuptials, Cooke said. There is a $55 marriage license fee due at the time of the application. An additional $25 is due at the time of the civil marriage ceremony. Deputy Clerk Sue Binder has worked in the marriage licensing office for 23 years, and she said she has seen it all. "We swear them in, put their information into the computer, they review it and we print out their marriage license," Binder said. It sounds quick and easy; however, there is a list of questions to be answered for vital statistics and a state mandated 48 hour wait before a wedding can occur. Ebony Williams, 19, and Derek Archer, 21, both of Suitland, celebrated Valentine's Day two days early. "We were trying to get it close enough," Williams said before the ceremony. "This is the most sacred thing, and it's something you are supposed to do once with a special person, and Derek is the one for me."
