A modern day Renaissance woman February 5, 1997Renaissance is a word you don't hear much anymore. She has done paintings for dozens of area projects, including the logo for the Brunswick Rail Road museum, the mail truck picture for the Mount Airy post office, and the Frederick Christmas cards for the past six years. She is currently working on a collection of paintings to be used for the New Market calendar."I'm a wildlife painter, but I paint a lot of historic buildings. I've also had a lot of Civil War work lately," she said. "But I'm mostly wildlife, equine. You would be wrong."I'm self taught," she said proudly. "I don't talk in artistspeak. I don't even consider myself an artist. I'm just a painter."Sherry Kemp also paints for postcards, a hobby for which she has gained international recognition. "I'm listed in [postcard collecting] price guides in France," she said. "I guess I'm the Jerry Lewis of postcards."Maybe France appreciates her postcard work for its surreal nature. When working with postcards, Kemp gives herself the license to paint unusual things like dragons, mermaids, and Santa Claus dressed as Uncle Sam and playing a drum. A true virtuoso: she can paint whatever comes to mind."To tell you the truth, I don't remember when I first started drawing and painting," Kemp said. in English literature. Like most artist sanctuaries, decoration here exists solely for the pleasure and comfort of the decorator."This is kind of like my playroom," Kemp said. That is why she currently has two Ford Mustangs awaiting reconstruction."I don't try and keep every part consistent and accurate with the original model," she said. "I just like a nice ride.""I seem to adopt them like puppies," she added. "I'm not exhibit oriented," she said. "I just paint because it's an interest of mine. I do it because it's fun."Spoken like a true Renaissance woman.
